366 walkers took part in our 2026 Tees Heritage Walk.
Mickey Mouse was an unexpected guest.
Middlesbrough Erimus Rotary proudly hosted its fourth annual TEES HERITAGE WALK on Sunday 17th May — and what a day it was!
Under glorious sunny skies, an incredible 366 walkers took part, representing more than 50 charities from across the region. Together, participants are expected to have raised in excess of £30,000 while enjoying the area’s rich heritage and historic route.
Adding to the atmosphere, Mickey Mouse was on hand to cheer walkers along the way before they were entertained by fantastic live performances from Musical Youth Middlesbrough.
A huge thank you goes to our wonderful supporters including Middlesbrough College, Rotarians from Stokesley, Teesside West and Saltburn, as well as the dedicated Police Cadets, whose help made the event such a success. Treading a route beside the Tees which is host to no less than THREE national Trails the walkers were able to observe a ‘Hidden Green Teesside’ with reed marshes an, butterfly parks and recently planted deciduous trees alongside its former industrial heartland. New and greener industries give way above the Newport Bridge to the environmental improvement projects which in turn are succeeded by a variety of people pleasing activities around the Tees Barrage. The weather was perfect for a walking event with a Westerly breeze and sufficient sunshine to keep smiles wide across its participants faces whilst their feet took the strain.
Now in its fourth year the event now grows steadily year on year and offers those who do not wish or are not able to run a half marathon to take part in a a low cost organised event raising funds for their chosen charity or good cause . It is anticipated that this year at least £25000 will be raised and thanks are expressed to sponsors PD Ports, Cleveland Cable, AV Dawson SG Petch and Chapter’s Deli.
Middlesbrough College students play a large part in THW with their Art and Design section competing to produce a logo for the year’s marketing literature, Digital students turn local history tales into QR codes which are placed on the route for walkers to learn as they travel the riverbank. On walk day the College’s Public Service students act as Marshalls along the route and all of the young people get to participate in a live real world event whilst adding a positive to their CVs. This year the Mayors of both Middlesbrough and Stockton took part and the hope is that in 2027 there will be a musical welcome as next years participants reach Stockton’s soon to be opened Riverside Park.
