Variety ,it is said is the spice of life and the members of Erimus with guests from across other Teesside rotary clubs had a richly varied meeting on Tuesday July 28th.
First off the pleasure of welcoming new member Christopher Prior-Jones who is rejoining Rotary after moving into Teesside from Plymouth . Louise Wilson was also inducted into membership as the Corporate member representative of TUNN (Tees Urban Nature Network), the hope is that TUNN can share their environmental capacity across a broader Rotary network.
Next on the agenda was an enlightening description of Rotary life amongst our distant Rotary colleagues in Balaju Nepal. This was presented by Dr Kumar Kaushaleadra. One of their great successes has been the provision of Microfinance or ‘Seed funding’ to groups of female entrepreneurs who develop small business projects, paying back their loans to enable an ever broader cohort to gain financial independence.
Kumar reminded listeners of the need to press forward with the campaign to End Polio Now as his country shares open borders with two countries where that disease is still to be eradicated-As he said “We are still in a Polio danger zone despite being declared Polio free some years ago”
A final very different presentation comprised a wide ranging and entertaining memoir from Chris Sumner who was for over thirty years the Coroner of Sefton Merseyside. Stories of misadventure and unlawful killing were leavened with humorous anecdotes and a sharing of Everton mints which as Chris explained are like Evertonians - Hard on the outside and soft on the inside! Members left greatly wiser on some less travelled paths of life and reawakened to the broad brushstrokes of Rotary’s impact across the globe
